Where We're Going

It’s an exciting time to lead Atlanta Public Schools! With the support and input of families, employees, and community members all over Atlanta, we’ve turned APS around and are moving into a better and brighter future for all our kids. Our mission statement says it all: "Through a caring culture of equity, trust, and collaboration, every student will graduate ready for college, career, and life." The mission statement is our foundation for student and system success.

If the mission statement is the foundation, then equity is the cornerstone. Every dollar, every decision, every program, and every person must advance equity so every child gets what they need to graduate ready for college, career, and life. I’m running for reelection to embed the Equity Policy in every area of APS and make it so much a part of who we are that it can never be disregarded.

Trust is gained over time. I’ve worked hard for decades to build trust at every level of APS and our community at large. Disagreement can be difficult, but if we trust one another we can always find a way to move forward together. In my third and final term on the Board, I will honor the trust you’ve placed in me by ensuring that everything we do raises the bar for every student.

Collaboration has been central to my APS involvement since the 1980s. My first campaign slogan was “Conscience. Connection. Community.” We can’t build a strong school system without bringing together the unique experiences and gifts of each part of our community for the benefit of all our kids. As your At-Large Board representative, I will continue to unite stakeholders across neighborhood, race, and class, working together creatively and collaboratively to build the Atlanta Public Schools our children and our city deserve.

Building a solid structure takes skill, experience, creativity, and a vision for the finished product. Building a world-class school system requires all these plus a proven commitment to equity, trust, and collaboration. Thank you for your support as we work together to turn our vision into reality.
